Easy BBQ Chicken Drumsticks in the Oven

BBQ chicken drumsticks in the oven are chicken legs coated with a sweet, smoky, sticky barbecue glaze and baked until tender. They give you the flavour of backyard barbecue without needing a grill, which makes them perfect for busy weeknights, rainy days, cold Canadian winters, or an easy family dinner any time of year.

BBQ Chicken Drumsticks in the Oven

This recipe is based on my YouTube video, with a few adjustments since publication to make the sauce cling better, the skin roast more evenly, and the final glaze caramelize without burning. I make it this way because drumsticks need enough time in the oven to become juicy near the bone, but the BBQ sauce should not go on too early or the sugars can darken too fast.

Why This Oven BBQ Chicken Works

The secret to good oven BBQ drumsticks is cooking in two stages. First, the chicken is seasoned and baked without the sauce so the skin can dry slightly and the spices can roast onto the meat. Then the barbecue sauce is brushed on near the end so it becomes sticky, glossy, and caramelized.

I prefer to do it this way instead of coating the chicken heavily from the start because barbecue sauce contains sugar. If it goes into a hot oven for the full cooking time, it can burn before the inside of the drumsticks is fully cooked. Adding the sauce later gives you better colour, better texture, and a cleaner BBQ flavour.

This recipe is different from my crispy baked drumsticks because the focus here is not only crispiness. The goal is a juicy oven-baked chicken leg with a sticky BBQ finish. If you want a more simple roasted version, try my crispy oven chicken drumsticks. If you want a fried version with a crunchy coating, my fried chicken drumsticks are the better choice.

Ingredients

For the chicken:

  • 10 chicken drumsticks
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons kosher salt
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 teaspoons smoked paprika
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1/2 teaspoon chili powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper, optional

For the BBQ glaze:

  • 3/4 cup barbecue sauce
  • 1 tablespoon honey
  • 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon melted butter
  • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
  • 1/2 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce, optional

If you have time, you can use a homemade sauce instead of bottled barbecue sauce. A rich homemade BBQ sauce gives this recipe a deeper flavour and lets you control the sweetness, acidity, and spice.

How to Make BBQ Chicken Drumsticks in the Oven

Preheat the oven to 425°F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or foil, then place a wire rack on top if you have one. The rack helps the heat circulate around the drumsticks and keeps the bottom from steaming. If you do not have a rack, the recipe still works directly on the lined baking sheet.

Pat the drumsticks very dry with paper towels. This step is important. If the chicken is wet, the seasoning turns pasty and the skin will steam instead of roast. Place the drumsticks in a large bowl, add the olive oil, salt, pepper, smoked paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, thyme, chili powder, and cayenne if using. Toss until every piece is evenly coated.

Arrange the drumsticks on the rack with space between them. Bake for 25 minutes. Flip the drumsticks and bake for another 10 to 15 minutes, or until the chicken is nearly cooked through and the skin has started to brown.

While the chicken bakes, mix the barbecue sauce, honey, apple cider vinegar, melted butter, Dijon mustard, and Worcestershire sauce in a small bowl. The vinegar balances the sweetness, the butter gives shine, and the mustard helps the glaze taste less flat.

Brush the drumsticks generously with the BBQ glaze. Return them to the oven for 7 minutes. Flip, brush again, and bake another 5 to 8 minutes until the sauce is sticky and the chicken reaches 175°F to 185°F near the bone. Chicken is technically safe at 165°F, but drumsticks are better when cooked a little higher because the connective tissue softens and the meat becomes more tender.

For extra caramelization, broil the drumsticks for 1 to 2 minutes at the end. Watch closely because BBQ sauce can go from glossy to burned very quickly.

Let the chicken rest for 5 minutes before serving. This helps the juices settle and gives the glaze a few minutes to thicken on the surface.

What Makes This Different From Other Chicken Recipes on the Site

This oven BBQ version is for a sticky, saucy, family-style chicken dinner. It is not the same as my easy one-pan marinated chicken, which is more about a simple marinade and roasted pan juices. It is also different from my mustard chicken marinade, where the flavour is tangier and less sweet.

Compared with my sticky soy maple chicken, this recipe has more classic BBQ flavour and less Asian-inspired soy-maple depth. Compared with my honey garlic chicken, this version is smokier and more oven-roasted, with the sauce added near the end.

If you want something lighter and faster in the air fryer, use my juicy air fryer chicken breast or air fryer chicken thighs. This BBQ drumstick recipe is more of a hearty comfort food dinner, perfect with potatoes, rice, salad, or vegetables.

Tips for the Best BBQ Drumsticks

Do not add the BBQ sauce too early. This is the biggest mistake with oven BBQ chicken. The sugar in the sauce burns faster than the chicken cooks, so the first part of the baking should be dry-seasoned only.

Use a hot oven. A 425°F oven gives better browning than a low temperature. Drumsticks have enough fat and bone to handle the heat.

Cook drumsticks past 165°F when possible. For chicken breast, I am careful not to overcook. For drumsticks and thighs, I prefer a slightly higher internal temperature because the meat becomes more tender and easier to eat.

Use a rack if you have one. It gives better airflow and helps the drumsticks roast instead of sitting in their own juices.

Finish with broil only if needed. If the chicken already looks sticky and caramelized, skip the broiler. If the sauce looks pale, broil briefly and watch closely.

Health and Nutrition Context

Chicken drumsticks are a protein-rich and budget-friendly cut of chicken. They are slightly richer than chicken breast because of the skin and dark meat, but that also makes them juicy, flavourful, and forgiving in the oven.

To make the recipe a little lighter, remove the skin after baking or use a barbecue sauce with less added sugar. For a heartier comfort food plate, serve them with potatoes or rice. For a fresher meal, pair them with roasted vegetables, coleslaw, or a crisp salad.

What to Serve with Oven BBQ Chicken Drumsticks

These drumsticks go very well with potatoes. For a crispy side, serve them with homemade Belgian fries or crispy air fryer fries. For something more classic and comforting, add homemade mashed potatoes or classic pommes boulangères.

Rice is another excellent option because it catches the extra sauce. A simple fluffy rice pilaf makes the meal feel complete without stealing attention from the chicken.

For sauces and dips, serve the drumsticks with garlic mayo, spicy mayo, or homemade ranch dressing. If you like a fresher bite beside sweet BBQ chicken, add classic creamy coleslaw or roasted mixed vegetables.

For more chicken dinner ideas, try oven-baked chicken thighs,one-pan lemon garlic chicken, or oven-roasted chicken.

Substitutions

You can use chicken thighs instead of drumsticks. Bone-in, skin-on thighs work especially well, but the cooking time may change slightly depending on size. For a dedicated thigh recipe, use my oven chicken thighs as a guide.

You can use maple syrup instead of honey. This is a great Canadian-style variation and gives the glaze a deeper sweetness.

You can use your favourite bottled BBQ sauce. Choose smoky, spicy, sweet, or tangy depending on the flavour you want.

You can make it spicy. Add cayenne pepper, hot sauce, chipotle powder, or a spoonful of spicy mayo on the side.

You can make it less sweet. Skip the honey and add an extra teaspoon of apple cider vinegar.

You can use a dry rub only. If you want a less saucy chicken, skip the glaze and serve barbecue sauce on the side.

FAQ

Can I make BBQ chicken drumsticks ahead of time?

Yes. You can season the chicken up to 24 hours ahead and keep it covered in the fridge. This helps the salt season the meat more deeply. Add the BBQ sauce only during the final part of baking.

Should I cover the chicken while baking?

No. Bake the drumsticks uncovered. Covering traps steam and prevents the skin from roasting properly.

Can I use frozen drumsticks?

Yes, but thaw them fully first. Frozen or partially frozen chicken will cook unevenly and release too much moisture in the oven.

How do I know when chicken drumsticks are done?

Use a meat thermometer and check near the bone without touching the bone. The chicken is safe at 165°F, but drumsticks are usually juicier and more tender around 175°F to 185°F.

Can I use this method for wings?

Yes, but wings cook faster. For a wing-specific recipe, use my air fryer chicken wings or spicy baked chicken wings as a better guide.

Can I make this recipe without a wire rack?

Yes. Place the drumsticks directly on a lined baking sheet and flip them halfway through cooking. A rack helps with airflow, but it is not required.

Why is my BBQ sauce burning?

The sauce was probably added too early or the oven rack was too close to the top heating element. Add the BBQ glaze near the end and broil only briefly if needed.

Can I grill these instead?

Yes. Bake them almost fully, then finish on the grill for a smoky flavour. Or grill them completely over medium heat and brush with sauce near the end.
